Welcome to The Calibre Brief, a Calibre Code USA production. The Army wants combat drones that can be replaced as quickly as they are threatened. Its wager is simple in theory, difficult in practice. One target captures the ambition: 10,000 tube-launched airframes every month, assembled for $2,000 each. These are small uncrewed aircraft sent from ground or air platforms, not conventional aircraft bought in small fleets. The Army wants a supply chain for machines that can scout, sense, target, or disrupt signals, then be replaced when necessary. To make that possible, the government defines the physical, electrical, data, and software connections between parts. AEVEX, Griffon, and Dragoon are the long-range platforms. Earlier work supported infrared and electronic-warfare payloads, and AeroVironment's P550 is intended for long-range reconnaissance. The idea is to swap a sensor, jammer, radio, or airframe without returning to a closed supplier. That promise dwarfs the public test. A Phase II demonstration calls for at least 80 airframes in one week, with a design change during the run. That tests flexibility. It does not demonstrate 10,000 each month. Public material does not show how Army will assure software conformity, cybersecurity, and multi-vendor integration at speed, or whether updated modules can keep pace with electronic attack. The consequence is a test, not a drone purchase. Defense Department policy requires appropriate human judgment over the use of force, yet the Army has not settled how many people must supervise them. Procurement, manufacturing, software assurance, command systems, and human control must move together. Planned 2026 deliveries and production demonstrations will test that claim. The program's real measure is not a vendor list. It is whether standardized parts can be produced, updated, trusted, and directed quickly enough to matter while accountability remains human.
