Along a mountain border corridor, a sudden wall of debris turned a river route into a disaster zone. What began it, and what remains upstream?

Chinese security-camera footage captures people running through the Gyirong border area as a surge several stories high arrives behind them. It overturns lorries and buses, then tears through buildings. This was not a normal overflowing river. Mud, rock, and water moved together through a corridor used by communities, travelers, and border traffic alike.

Satellite imagery points upstream, about 20 kilometers northeast of Rasuwagadhi. A snow-and-rock landslide entered the Lhende river and loaded its flow with debris. The Lhende feeds the Bhote Koshi, which reaches Nepal's Trishuli and then India's Gandak system. One slope failure therefore sent danger down a river network shared by several countries.

Then comes the tempting explanation. Germany's GFZ recorded a magnitude 4.4 earthquake about seven minutes before the camera timestamp. That sequence is real. It does not prove the quake triggered the avalanche. Nepal's foreign minister described it as an initial hypothesis, and ICIMOD said the cause remained unconfirmed. The evidence establishes a landslide and flood. It does not establish why the slope failed.

The debris blockage remained upstream after the surge passed. Authorities warned residents downstream to move uphill, and Bihar evacuated about 5,000 people from six districts. Roads, power, border trade, hydropower capacity, and pilgrimage routes were disrupted. The river ignores national borders; warning systems and official responsibility remain divided by them.

The clearest lesson is not a settled cause, but a shared exposure. Before investigators know why a slope failed, downstream communities still need a warning.
